Is 5G really so hard to break?


5G is not a nut at all like previous Gs. 5G is a re-imagination, paradigm shifts and new vision to accommodate certain advancements on radio and core network technologies, like massive MIMO, SDN/NFV, VNF/Cloud and MEC. 5G is also about upcoming use cases and capability & flexibility provided for them like IOT, Network Slicing or Application defined networking.

By and large it’s an end-to-end overhauling with new instruments to existing networks, which may be of concern for many reason, that need a transformational approach. As VNF and Cloud are most obvious tools to take up the necessary load of new functionality, MEC at the RAN level will be pivotal to discriminate the service logics and catalyze the application specific requirements fulfillment.

The transformation is going to shape-in with the shift in architectural paradigms to more hybrid or heterogeneous approaches and also leveraging the virtualization to accommodate variety of applications and use cases like for massive IOT, public safety, HD  video, mission critical i.e. latency sensitive applications.

Mobile edge computing abbreviated as MEC is about the cloud at edge or may be related to new term called as fog computing which is about putting many of RAN specific functionalities on virtual systems which are adaptive to load and computational requirements. MEC will help to provide right orchestration for VNF kind of architecture need for End to End networking, in term of network operation and performance optimization. MEC is best for the uses cases like for content management networks, latency sensitive applications, massive access management etc.

Virtualization is the kingpin in whole 5G conception as the required flexibility of the systems and network can be provided through it and that help to accommodate the application specific configuration with the term that provide end to end re-construction i.e. it is all about network slicing. Network slicing can also be envisaged as application defined networking that is about ad-hoc re-deployment or re-configuring network in line to the specific application requirements.  As per the 5G specification, this re-deployment time is not in days but in minutes and saying precisely it is 90 minutes only.

3GPP completed SA mode 5G specifications for release 15. How the industry will incorporate SA and NSA?


As 3GPP announced a new milestone on 5G release 15 standardization, that is completion of Stand Alone mode specification of 5G operation. The big question arises, would there be a split in 5G deployments in near future (i.e. with the availability of equipment's and mobile terminals)? because there is no obstruction possible on NSA mode rather NSA is going to have a major coverage, in fact for large coverage areas NSA would be there and probably SA would cover smaller coverage areas through small cells.

SA mode is about no LTE for control plane but both plane would be on NR only. So SA will put LTE on spare, really? That is feasible only for smallcell deployment cases as the operators are not going to make LTE spare due to heavy investment. Rather that is the upbring of 5G in real sense. We have already witnessed gigabit LTE deployments and vested interest of operator on it through LAA and LWA due to LTE based carrier aggregation CA or multi RAT convergence.

That trends is leading towards the solid root for NSA mode, SA mode would be filling the gap and caveats but not overshadowing it anywhere. The Fixed broadband uses case of 5G NR so far has been for millimeter waves but sub 6 Ghz NR has yet to come for mobile use cases ( as we all are waiting for mobile terminals use cases). 

LTE is far established and well coordinated for network spread and coverage enhancements, 5G NR has yet to come for that level of maturity and that's gonna take long time. Still LTE and 5G both seems to be moving parallel as there seems to be no obstruction for LTE as well. Technology has matured and taken its much advance form in LTE adv pro. In fact LTE adv pro is well taken to accomplish much of 5G use cases, whether it be massiv IOT, V2X or URLLC use cases like for robotics or healthcare.

Therefore 5G is not about 5G NR only,  There is much more wider outlook for 5G, like Network Slicing, Application defined etc, etc. 5G is a big hash, technology under which create a comprehensive system, not a isolated sliver.

India's Telecom Policy Contrived to be Fitting with Next Gen Era.


The DoT is in process of formulating a National Telecom Policy that will focus on areas such as Internet for all, next-generation technologies like 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), skills development, and security, among others.

The discussions held a week ago were around policy and regulatory framework, spectrum framework, security requirements for telecom networks, ease of doing business, and even manufacturing and exports. Ideas around cloud economic zones, aligning of the Center and states to achieve telecom objectives, and devising network and regulations for IoT devices, were mooted.

The DoT plans to go for a wide consultation and outreach before finalizing the new policy.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has already held its first round of discussions with operators, industry associations and research organisations on the broad contours and key focus areas under the new telecom policy, which the government wants to bring in by 2018.

"We're expecting the draft of the new telecom policy to be out by December, the working groups are being created as we speak," telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan said on the sidelines of a CII event on fintech.

DoT plans a wide consultation and outreach before finalising the new policy, and has said it will invite views from the likes of Apple, Google and Amazon, along with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), during consultations on NTP. It will also seek views of the public at large.

How are Qualcomm creating the 5G future? 
What will be the key drivers for 5G commercialization?

Q. Why is 5G so important to Qualcomm? 

A. Qualcomm has over 30 years of tradition leading the path to innovation. Our inventions fundamentally influence all aspects of mobile implementation and user experience synergistically making the whole wireless system work together to support advanced services, bringing value far beyond individual components. 5G is a unifying connectivity fabric that will expand the value of mobile networks to take on a much larger role than previous generations, empowering many new connected services across an array of world-changing use cases. Qualcomm has vast experience in all technologies and building blocks of 5G and is uniquely positioned to accelerate the launch of 5G networks, devices and the enablement of new services. 5G will accelerate world transformation, gains in productivity, and improve life quality. As we like to say: Why Wait. 

Q. Qualcomm are being quite progressive with 5G plans – “creating” rather than “talking” about the 5G future. What does this “creation” look like? 

A. As we did with 3G and 4G, Qualcomm is leading the world to 5G. We are designing a unified, more capable 5G platform – pioneering many new technologies to meet 5G’s expanded and radically diverse connectivity requirements. We are driving 5G NR from standardisation to commercialisation – contributing to 3GPP standard activities and collaborating with industry leaders on impactful 5G demonstrations/trials to prepare for commercial network launches. At the same time, we are leading the evolution of 4G LTE to its full potential, pioneering 5G technologies and use cases today with LTE advancements such as unlicensed spectrum, deviceto-device, narrowband IoT, and more. Finally, we are supporting early 5G deployments and field trials with our first 5G modem solution – the Snapdragon X50 5G Modem – to gain real-world experience in commercializing mmWave technology that will be utilised to accelerate the 5G NR standard. 

Q. Where do existing LTE, LTE-A networks fit in the 5G conversation? 

A. The best path to 5G is the implementation of advancements made available by LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro. LTE Advanced Pro is a rich roadmap of 4G LTE technologies which represent progressing LTE capabilities towards 5G. These new technologies will not only vastly enhance mobile broadband performance and efficiency, but also expand LTE technology and ecosystem to new industries such as the Internet of Things, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, digital TV broadcasting, and more. LTE Advanced Pro is leading the path to 5G by pioneering many of the envisioned 5G technologies and use cases in advance of expected 5G commercialisation.

Q. What key 5G partnerships are Qualcomm involved with? 

A. The deployment of 5G will be a collaborative effort. From standardization - where Qualcomm is a leading contributor to the 3GPP 5G NR - to field testing of prototypes, to impactful trials and demonstrations, we partner with industry leaders who like Qualcomm are committed to invest and lead in LTE, 5G NR, and early 5G mmWave deployments, ranging from device and network equipment manufacturers to carriers and service providers. Qualcomm has made multiple announcements of milestones leading to the deployment with 5G and will continue doing so in collaboration with industry leaders. 

Q. What use cases do Qualcomm think will be key drivers for 5G commercialisation? 

A. Similar to previous generational transitions, 5G will also bring significant improvement in data rates and bandwidth, but this time around we will also see great improvements in key aspects that will enable new use cases. Ultra-low latency and higher reliability capabilities will usher in applications such as Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), which will ultimately allow mass adoption of autonomous vehicles. Remote command and control of mission critical activities in healthcare, public safety, drones and robots will get to the necessary level of reliability for mass deployment. Also important, low-power, simplified communication modes will allow the massification of IoT applications as an expansion on the foundation being laid today with LTE technology


Q. How has the 5G landscape changed over the past year? 

A. We are transitioning from vision to reality, devices are becoming available, trials and demonstrations are happening. The level of excitement has certainly picked up and it will continue gaining momentum through the next few years. 

Q. Why has Qualcomm chosen to take part in 5G Series events, such as 5G Latin America and 5G World, again in 2017? 

A. The pace of wireless technology adoption in Latin America has historically been lower than that of developed markets. However, transitions in generations represent catch-up opportunities. With good alignment among the players in the region, technology adoption can be accelerated, generating great value to the entire ecosystem. 5G Series events are a great opportunity to increase awareness of the impending industry transformations, exchange information within the community, and discuss opportunities that are particular to the reality of the region. The positive results of the 2016 edition encouraged us to participate in the 2017 5G event. The audience included companies and professionals we were interested in addressing; the conference topics and speakers were of relevance to our business; the event attendees provided interesting networking opportunities. Another reason why we saw value in the event in 2017 was the inclusion of the Broadband segment, an important area for Qualcomm’s connectivity businesses.
